Thoracolumbar fractures or Luxations (Back Fractures)
There are occasions when dogs or cats can suffer a significant trauma that leads to a luxation or dislocation of the vertebral bodies or a fracture and dislocation of the vertebral bodies. This most frequently occurs in the thoracic or lumbar vertebral bodies. The prognosis is determined by the degree of dislocation and neurologic condition.
Although this seems like a catastophic injury there is a chance it can be repaired with a good outcome. Dogs and cats that have adequate neurologic condition can have a good prognosis. As long as they have deep pain and their reflexes are intact they can have a favorable result.
Surgical repair of a back fracture is not to be undertaken lightly but it is possible. Please call if you wish to discuss a case.
